Republicans and Independents for Impeaching Bush and Cheney

not an option, a duty

Am I a Conservative?

There might be some people wondering who is behind this site, and what kind of Republican he is. He’s been flamed at Powerline (who hasn’t? You guys are brutal. )

So when I gave my conservative credentials when I was called upon it after I published “A Conservative’s Case for Impeachment” on Powerline, I said:

- I like small government, as powerless as can be managed save to coordinate basic functions like roads and jails. Just leave me alone the rest of the time, boys. We got a still out back and we don’t like no revenooers.

- I believe in individual responsibility and that at some point you’ve got to stop bellyaching to the government and take charge of your life. Get another job and go to night school. Do it the old-fashioned way: work

- I believe Americans are born free, and have rights guaranteed, that were payed for in full with blood.

I actually don’t like being subject to labels, and having to choose between Republican or Democrat or whatever. I toyed with the idea recently of just declaring myself Independent, and maybe I will. But I see no reason to allow the party of Trust Buster Teddy Roosevelt or Abraham Lincoln to be highjacked by the likes of George Bush and Dick Cheney, damned Neo-Con Authoritarians who use the Constitution to wipe doggy poo from their shoes.

Yes I was a Democrat once, but the more I saw of the Democratic party rolling over and becoming collaborators to treason, the more I saw their values were not mine. Or rather their absence of values, besides the KA-CHING! machine that is the Rahm Emmanual-type lawyer-lobbyists whose god is their Beamer mechanic. I kind of always liked Republicans because they make no bones about whose interest they are acting in. Theirs. If you are against me just tell me so, we can agree to disagree and go get a beer, fer Chrisake. But don’t pee on me then try to tell me that it’s raining, like the Democrats. Or like old Rahm did to Paul Hackett, one of the best Iraq War veteran candidates ever to run for US Senate.

I digress. If what defines Democrat vs. Republican is belief that big government is the solution to most problems, then I am not a Democrat. If belief in the primacy of the Constitution and in the freedoms that make us the freest people in the world makes me a Republican, I guess you’d better call me that, or at least a conservative. Because I sure as hell do believe that. And no deficit quadrupling, prisoner-torturing, Constitution-shredding, undercover agent-betraying, smirking little rich kid who went to Andover and Yale is going to twist the meaning of this old and honorable party of Eisenhower and Barry Goldwater into a goose-stepping cartoon. Goldwater who loved his country so much that he told Nixon he had to go, even if he was in his own party.

I wonder who’ll be our next Barry Goldwater, who’ll tell Bush and Cheney its time to hit the bricks because they’re marching up the street with torches and pitchforks?

The Founders almost outlawed all political parties. They believed it was too easy for men to be blinded by party loyalty to the difference between what was good for the country, and what was good for the party. I’m wondering if it’s a shame they didn’t succeed.

Interesting! While we obviously tick differently (I’m a liberal), it’s good to know there are some thinking conservatives out there in the world. Thanks for publishing your views!

Actually, I have to say I have been wondering what the heck happened to the so called “conservatives”. As for allegedly being against big government; well, hijacking the Constitution and using a Big Brother approach to running the country doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. It also is not very fiscally smart to waste the majority of our tax dollars on a pointless war that was started under false pretenses. I would call you a paleo-con. Meaning, an old school THINKING Republican/Independant/Whatever you wish to be called.

As for your comment about the Democrats pissing on you; that is what I would call Reaganomics! ie: “trickle down”. As in, the rich get richer by pissing all over everyone else! I hope you can appreciate the humor in that even if we might disagree. Keep on writing! Conservatives such as yourself can perhaps restore the dignity of that is completely lacking now from the Republican Party!
